History of Roulette (European).
Gambling has been an occurrence for many centuries. Around 2000 years ago, Romans had gaming houses which dealt with betting on a life or death sport held in their arenas.
Simple Chance games such as Dice were very common in these places, although they could be played both indoors and outdoors. Because there was no urgency in providing gambling houses, the Casino was not actually created until centuries later.
In the early 17th Century, Italy formed its first “Casini” (little house). The first ever legal Casino was actually established in Austria in 1765.
The first roulette games that are recognized as modern roulette were initially introduced in the casinos in Paris around the last part of the 18th century. France had developed this game and demanded an organised, indoor playing condition. The expression "Roulette" was copied from a French word that meant small wheel. The actual origin of the roulette game is not that clear. Some people say that a 17th Century French mathematician named Blaise Pascal had invented the roulette wheel, whilst other people say that it was originated in China and then brought to Europe by the Dominican monks who were at the time trading with the Chinese people. Although, the modern adaptation of the roulette wheel is said to have evolved in 1842 when two Frenchmen named Francois and Louis Blanc introduced the single "0" game of roulette.
The roulette game had all of the features that are around nowadays but with one exception - the single zero was in the colour red whilst the double zero in black. This brought some confusion to the players. Because of this, the colour green was then used for the zero & double zero in order to alleviate the bewilderment.
In the year 1720, Englishmen played a game named ‘roly-poly’, which is said to be one of the first adaptations of the modern-day roulette game.
In the middle of the 19th century the single zero roulette game was introduced in France. This decreased the casino's edge which therefore increased the odds to the gambler. When gambling was banned in Germany, Louis Blanc, the inventor of the roulette single zero machine accepted an offer to go to Monaco in order to set up and operate a casino. Others say that the game of roulette became extremely popular in the late 18th century when Prince Charles (the ruler of Monaco at this time) brought gambling to Monaco in order to alleviate its financial problems.
This Monaco casino set the values for roulette in Europe, and the game of roulette stayed restricted to Monte Carlo until the year 1933. This brought about the gambling & resort business in Monaco as a lot of Europe's rich people were attracted to this deluxe Monte Carlo casino.
Other earlier theories embrace accounts of the Ancient Romans using their chariot wheels and putting them on their sides and then spinning the wheels as a type of entertainment. Yet another European origin of this game comes from a carnival-type of wheel game which was an important part of the travelling carnival society of the early & mid 1500s. There is some evidence, however, that suggests that this carnival game only slightly resembles the present-day roulette game. There are two types of roulette wheels – The European Wheel and the American Wheel.
The European roulette Wheel simply has 37 numbers starting at 0 and ending at number 36. By having just the one zero (0) enables the house to have a 2.70% advantage. Therefore, meaning that for every €100 a gambler bets with, the house will actually make a profit of €2.70. If the ball ends on the number zero (0) in the European casino, the gambler has the choice of using the en prison rule, where he/she is able to choose whether to surrender one half of their outside wagers or just to keep them for their next game.
In the late 1990’s, online casinos were introduced. This has provided a lot more scope for the roulette game to be played. The players now have the choice of both playing the American or the European versions of Roulette regardless of which country they live in, as they will be at home and playing online. Players will also obtain great bonuses for playing.
